A research and development project of the Hong Kong Textile and Apparel Research and Development Center uses food waste as a raw material to transform its organism into a spinning machine that can be used in the garment industry through fermentation and other projects. The project won the 44th Geneva International Invention Exhibition Special Recognition Gold Award.

On the 26th, the Hong Kong Textile and Apparel Research and Development Center held a press conference to introduce details of several award-winning R&D projects.

According to reports, the recovered kitchen waste can be obtained by fermentation, and since the polylactic acid can be biodegraded, the finished textile can be finally decomposed into water and carbon dioxide to form a complete circulation system.

Zhong Guobin, a member of the Legislative Council of the SAR and a former director of the Textile and Apparel Research and Development Center, said that the problem of food waste in Hong Kong is serious. The cost of converting kitchen waste into garment fiber is low and has high social responsibility. It is the result of combining traditional industry with technology. .

Another project that received a special recognition gold award is solvent-assisted cotton fiber dyeing. The water consumption of this dyeing process accounts for one tenth of the water consumption of the current market dyeing method, saves water and electricity, and the environmentally friendly solvent used can be recycled.

Matt Hui, a fashion designer who runs a knitting brand, said in an interview with the China News Service that environmental protection is the mainstream of the future. The two projects are sustainable, but I want to see the dyeing effect, whether it can be done with color or not. Fading, whether it causes sensitivity and other issues.

Ge Yiwen, Chief Executive Officer of the Textile and Apparel Research and Development Center, said that the Center cooperates with various sectors of the society, including designing high-performance sportswear for the Hong Kong Sports Institute, designing windproof and warm-keeping jackets for the elderly, and designing intelligent fetal monitoring belts for pregnant women.
